Benefits and Issues: By "idle talk" (lahw al-hadith) is meant everything—whether a thing or speech—that causes a person to become heedless of Allah, the Exalted. In the present age, what could be greater than singing, music, films, and dramas in making a person heedless of the remembrance of Allah? For this reason, the leader of the commentators, Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma), interpreted this as referring to singing. Ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu), Mujahid, Hasan al-Basri, and most other commentators have also understood this to mean singing. And the understanding of the Companions and the Followers (Tabi'un) is far superior to that of the modernists who follow in the footsteps of the disbelievers.
