Hadith 762

It is narrated from Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Abdullah said to Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both), or Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud asked Sayyiduna Abu Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): "What have you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding 'za‘m' (claim/assumption)?" He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a bad mount for a man."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that until one is certain about something, one should refrain from acting upon it. When a person does not have knowledge of the actual situation, he should remain silent. He should adopt such an approach as to say, "People say," "It is thought," "Someone has said." One should avoid such baseless talk.
