Hadith 752

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنِي عَامِرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِسَعْدٍ‏:‏ ”إِنَّكَ لَنْ تُنْفِقَ نَفَقَةً تَبْتَغِي بِهَا وَجْهَ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلاَّ أُجِرْتَ بِهَا، حَتَّى مَا تَجْعَلُ فِي فَمِ امْرَأَتِكَ‏.‏“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: “Whatever you spend seeking the pleasure of Allah, you will surely be rewarded for it, even the morsel that you put in your wife’s mouth, you will be rewarded for that as well.”

Benefits and Issues:
It is obligatory (fard) upon the husband to fulfill the maintenance (nafaqah) of his wife, and there is reward for fulfilling an obligation. When the intention behind this is to seek the pleasure of Allah, the reward increases even more. The wife is mentioned specifically because in providing her with food and drink, there is also an element of desire (shahwah), but if the purpose is the pleasure of Allah, then reward is certainly attained as well.
