حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَدِيُّ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ يَزِيدَ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الْبَدْرِيِّ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: ”مَنْ أَنْفَقَ نَفَقَةً عَلَى أَهْلِهِ، وَهُوَ يَحْتَسِبُهَا، كَانَتْ لَهُ صَدَقَةً.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud Badri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever spends on his family while hoping for reward and goodness, then it will be charity for him."

In the previous hadith, the mention was of spending in general; in this hadith, it has been specified that this virtue is attained when there is hope for reward.
