Hadith 748

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, the best dinar is the one that a man spends on his family, and the dinar that he spends on his companions in the way of Allah, and the dinar that he spends on his mount in the way of Allah......" Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began with the family...... "And who is greater in reward than the one who spends on his small children until Allah makes them self-sufficient?"

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Spending on one’s wife and children is included among a person’s obligations; despite this, not only is there reward for it, but it is the most virtuous form of charity. However, the condition for this is that a person, while fulfilling his obligations, also maintains the intention of seeking reward.
➋ Spending on one’s wife and children, while being the most virtuous charity, neglecting this responsibility is also a grave sin. The Prophetic statement is:
((Kafā bil-mar’i ithman an yudayya‘a man yaqūt)) (Sunan Abi Dawud, Zakat, Hadith: 1442)
“It is sufficient as a sin for a man that he neglects those whom he is responsible to provide for.”
