بَابُ إِكْرَامِ الضَّيْفِ وَخِدْمَتِهِ إِيَّاهُ بِنَفْسِهِChapter: Honoring and Serving the Guest Personally
Hadith 740
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دَاوُدَ ، عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَى نِسَائِهِ ، فَقُلْنَ : مَا مَعَنَا إِلا الْمَاءُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ”مَنْ يَضُمُّ ، أَوْ يُضِيفُ هَذَا؟“ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ : أَنَا ، فَانْطَلَقَ بِهِ إِلَى امْرَأَتِهِ ، فَقَالَ : أَكْرِمِي ضَيْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : مَا عِنْدَنَا إِلا قُوتٌ لِلصِّبْيَانِ ، فَقَالَ : هَيِّئِي طَعَامَكِ ، وَأَصْلِحِي سِرَاجَكِ ، وَنَوِّمِي صِبْيَانَكِ إِذَا أَرَادُوا عَشَاءً ، فَهَيَّأَتْ طَعَامَهَا ، وَأَصْلَحَتْ سِرَاجَهَا ، وَنَوَّمَتْ صِبْيَانَهَا ، ثُمَّ قَامَتْ كَأَنَّهَا تُصْلِحُ سِرَاجَهَا فَأَطْفَأَتْهُ ، وَجَعَلا يُرِيَانِهِ أَنَّهُمَا يَأْكُلانِ ، وَبَاتَا طَاوِيَيْنِ ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ غَدَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ”لَقَدْ ضَحِكَ اللَّهُ ، أَوْ : عَجِبَ مِنْ فَعَالِكُمَا“، وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ : ﴿وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ وَمَنْ يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ﴾ [الحشر : 9].
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as a guest. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a message to his wives asking if they had anything to eat to send. They replied that they had nothing except water. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Who will take this person with him or who will host him?” An Ansari man said: I will take him with me. He took him to his wife and said: Honor the guest of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). She said: We have nothing except the food for the children. He said: Prepare the food, fix the lamp at the time of eating (and extinguish it), and if the children ask for dinner, put them to sleep. So she prepared the food and fixed the lamp well and put the children to sleep. Then she got up as if to fix the lamp, but she extinguished it. And both of them made him believe that they were eating, although both spent the night hungry. In the morning, they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said: “Allah laughed at or was pleased with your good deed.” And Allah revealed the verse: «وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ ۚ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ» [الحشر: 9] “They give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need. And whoever is saved from the greed of his soul, it is those who are successful.”
