It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ziyad, may Allah have mercy on him, that he said: I found the Salaf (the Companions and the Followers) living with their families in the same house. Whenever any of them had a guest and their pot was cooking, the one with the guest would take it for his guest. When the owner of the pot found the pot missing, he would ask, "Who has taken the pot?" The one with the guest would say, "We have taken it for the guest." The owner of the pot would say, "May Allah bless you in it," or would say words to that effect. Baqiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said that Muhammad said: And when they baked bread, it would be the same, and there was only a bamboo wall between their houses. Baqiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: And I also found my teacher Muhammad and his companions upon this way.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Muslims are brothers to one another and their attitude towards each other should be informal and free of pretension. This is in complete accordance with human nature. This practice remained prevalent among Muslims for a long time, that they would live with each other in this manner. Then, Western civilization and selfishness took the place of Islamic values, and every person became confined to himself, and the spirit of self-sacrifice and compassion disappeared. Then the American system became common, where the guest pays his own bill and the host pays his own. Even now, this spirit is found occasionally among Muslims, but Western society has been deprived of this blessing.

➋ For the benefit of the readers, I am mentioning an incident. The respected Director of Darussalam International, Abdul Malik Mujahid sahib, narrated one of his experiences: One day, I arranged a gathering at home in which an American new Muslim was also invited. On his departure, I presented him with a plate of biryani, saying, “Take this for your wife.” He was astonished. He could not believe it. He said, “Really?” I said, “Yes.” Then he asked, “What will happen to the plate?” I said, “That is also for you.” He said in amazement, “Plate also for me? The plate is also a gift for me?”

In this age of selfishness, there is a need to spread Islamic teachings and values. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised a tribe of the Ansar, saying that when their provisions fall short, they gather everything in one place and then distribute it equally among themselves.
