It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Walid bin ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that I went out with my father. At that time, I was a young boy. We met an elderly man who was wearing a sheet and a Ma’afiri cloth, and his slave was also dressed in the same way. I said, “Uncle! What is the harm if you give this striped sheet to your slave and take the other sheet from him? In this way, you would have two similar sheets, and the slave would have the striped sheet.” Hearing this, he turned to my father and asked, “Is this your son?” He replied, “Yes.” He placed his hand on my head and said, “May Allah bless him.” I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Feed them (your slaves) what you eat yourself, and clothe them with what you wear yourself.” My nephew! I prefer that the things of this world leave me rather than that they take anything from my provisions for the Hereafter. I asked, “Father! Who is this man?” He said, “This is Sayyiduna Abu al-Yasar Ka‘b bin ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him).”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Stroking a child’s head with affection is a Sunnah act, and praying for them is also the practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), which was acted upon by Ka‘b ibn ‘Amr (radi Allahu anhu). Furthermore, children and youth should be informed of the ahadith of the Messenger so that the spirit of following the Sunnah may be instilled in them.

➋ From this, it is understood that one should treat subordinates with utmost kindness and should consider their needs just as one considers one’s own needs.

➌ The garments that came from Yemen were called Ma‘afiri garments, and they were attributed to a tribe in Yemen named Ma‘afir.
