Hadith 734

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Whoever, in whose presence a believer is backbitten and he helps him, Allah Almighty will reward him in this world and the Hereafter. And whoever, in whose presence a Muslim is backbitten and he does not help him, that is, does not defend him, Allah Almighty will give him an evil recompense in this world and the Hereafter. And no one has put a worse morsel in his mouth than backbiting a believer. If he says something about him which he knows, then he has backbitten him, and if he says something about him which he does not know, then he has slandered him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From the statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, it is understood that if someone backbites a Muslim in front of you, then you should stop the one who is backbiting and defend the Muslim; otherwise, you will also be included in the same category. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
((Whoever defends the honor of his brother, Allah will turn the Fire away from his face on the Day of Resurrection.)) (Tirmidhi: 1931)
"Whoever defends the honor of a Muslim, Allah the Exalted will turn the Fire away from his face on the Day of Resurrection."
➋ This statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu is derived from various ahadith of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
