Hadith 732

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ ، عَنْ وَاصِلٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي عُيَيْنَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي خَالِدُ بْنُ عُرْفُطَةَ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَارْتَفَعَتْ رِيحٌ خَبِيثَةٌ مُنْتِنَةٌ ، فَقَالَ : ”أَتَدْرُونَ مَا هَذِهِ ؟ هَذِهِ رِيحُ الَّذِينَ يَغْتَابُونَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a foul wind blew, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: "Do you know what this is? This is the foul wind of those people who used to backbite the believers."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Backbiting (ghibah) is such a social cancer that everyone, without exception, is afflicted by it, even though it is a major sin (kabirah) and is equivalent to eating the flesh of one’s dead brother. Backbiting is to mention something about someone in their absence which they would dislike.
➋ The one who backbites a Muslim is such a great criminal that even the atmosphere is affected by its stench; it is another matter that Allah, the Exalted, does not reveal it at all times, or that we, due to our own insensitivity, are unable to perceive it.
