Hadith 731

It is narrated from Abu Nofal (may Allah have mercy on him) that his father, Sayyiduna Abu Aqrab (may Allah be pleased with him), asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast one day in every month." I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, please allow me to do more. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "More, more, fast two days in every month." I submitted: May my parents be sacrificed for you, please allow me to do more, I have the strength for more than this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have the strength for more, I have the strength for more." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept me quiet until I thought that he would never allow more than this. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast three days in every month."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that it is permissible to repeat someone’s words in order to express displeasure or to admonish them. In this, there is an expression of affection along with rebuke.
➋ Allah, the Exalted, loves the deed upon which there is consistency, even if it is little. Therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed the questioner to adopt a small deed. He would answer every questioner according to his capacity and would instruct action according to the level of faith. He instructed Abdullah ibn Amr (radi Allahu anhu) to fast one day and break the fast the next day, and this is the most virtuous form, but only for the one from whom regularity is hoped; otherwise, he should fast three days in a month. And these fasts should be observed on the “white days” (Ayyam al-Beed), that is, the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the Islamic month, as many of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) practiced this.
