Hadith 728

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to a man who had become so weak from illness that he was like a plucked bird. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pray to Allah or ask Him (for health)." He began to say: O Allah! Whatever punishment You have destined for me in the Hereafter, give it to me quickly in this world. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! You cannot bear that. Why did you not pray: O Allah! Grant us goodness in this world, and goodness in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire." Then he prayed, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, granted him healing.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that a person should always ask Allah Ta’ala for goodness and well-being (‘afiyah), because he cannot withstand trials.
➋ This narration shows how eager the Companions (Sahabah) were for the Hereafter in the best of generations (khayr al-quroon), and how greatly they feared Allah’s punishment. The Companion’s desire for trial was for the sake of attaining reward in the Hereafter.
➌ The entire incident is as follows: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went to visit this Companion (radi Allahu anhu) to inquire after his health. Upon seeing his condition, he asked whether he had made any supplication (du‘a). The Companion explained, and then in the presence of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), made this supplication: “O Lord, since You have not given me wealth for charity, then for the sake of attaining reward, subject me to some trial, and whatever punishment You have destined for me in the Hereafter, give it to me in this world.” At that, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Do not make such supplications.”
➍ From this, it is understood that one should not ask for calamity, even for the sake of attaining reward. Rather, to attain reward and recompense, one should ask Allah for goodness. However, if a calamity does befall, then one should be patient and supplicate to Allah Ta’ala for reward.
