Hadith 722

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that when he heard the sound of thunder, he would say: "Glory be to the One whose purity you have declared." He further said that thunder is an angel who shouts loudly to drive the clouds, just as a shepherd calls out loudly to drive his goats.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
The chain of narration of this report is weak; however, the glorification of Allah by the clouds is established from the Qur’an and authentic ahadith, as the following hadith indicates. And the authentic narration from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is as follows: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Thunder (ra‘d) is an angel who is in charge of the clouds. In his hand is an iron rod with which he drives the clouds. The sound that comes from it is the sound of driving the clouds, until they reach the place they have been commanded to go.” (Al-Sahihah by Al-Albani: 4/491)
