Hadith 716

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was present with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr! Indeed, shirk (associating partners with Allah) comes among you more hidden than the crawling of an ant." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Is there shirk other than associating someone with Allah? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, indeed shirk enters in a way more hidden than the crawling of an ant. Shall I not guide you to such words that when you say them, all minor and major shirk will be removed from you?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Say: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating partners with You, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this hadith, shirk refers to showing off (riya), ostentation, and conceit (‘ujb)—that a person considers himself great and performs good deeds to gain the praise of people rather than seeking the pleasure of Allah. However, when a person attains the recognition (ma‘rifah) of Allah and also comes to know his own self, he understands that every excellence, virtue, and honor he possesses is not his own, but rather a bestowal from Allah.
➋ Today, many people—even scholars—are afflicted with this shirk of showing off, such that every good deed is done to please the creation and to establish their own dominance over them. In the pleasure of seeking fame, they satisfy their own desires and think that they are engaged in acts of worship and distant from sins, whereas in reality, this worship and devotion is performed not to please the Creator, but for the pleasure of the self.
➌ The aforementioned supplication is for protection from both minor and major shirk; therefore, it should certainly be made a safeguard for oneself.
