Hadith 706

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, "Teach me a supplication that I may recite in my prayer." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Say: O Allah! Indeed, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You. So forgive me with forgiveness from Yourself, and have mercy on me. Surely, You are the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The specific place for this supplication in the prayer is not known; however, from the chapter headings (tabwib) of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah in Sahih al-Bukhari, it is understood that this supplication should be recited in the tashahhud before the salam. Although, it is also permissible to recite it during prostrations (sujud), because the state of prostration is also an important occasion for the acceptance of supplications.
➋ The scholars have written that this supplication is very great, because the Beloved (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught it to his beloved (i.e., the Companion) for intimate conversation (munajat) with the Beloved (Allah).
