It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with these words: "O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for well-being in my religion and my family and my wealth, and conceal my faults. Grant me security from fear, and protect me from in front of me, behind me, on my right, on my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your greatness from being taken unaware from beneath me, that is, from being swallowed up."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The greatest felicity for a servant is that Allah, the Exalted, pardons him. When Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha inquired about what supplication she should make on Laylat al-Qadr, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam instructed her to seek pardon and forgiveness from Allah, the Exalted. Indeed, there is nothing greater than well-being (‘afiyah), for all acts of worship and good deeds depend upon it.
➋ Our current situation is such that if the reality were to be fully exposed before one another, we would not be able to face each other. It is the grace and favor of Allah, the Exalted, that He has placed veils (of concealment). Therefore, one should continually supplicate to Allah, the Exalted, for concealment, and one should also conceal the faults of others.
➌ Satan tries to mislead a person from every direction; thus, protection from Allah, the Exalted, is needed from the past, present, future, and from all sides. And whomever Allah, the Exalted, takes responsibility to protect, no one can harm him.
➍ The previous nations were either seized by heavenly punishment or were seized from the earth. Therefore, refuge is also sought from the possible forms of punishment.
