It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer at midnight, he would recite this supplication: «اللَّهُمَّلَكَالْحَمْدُ،أَنْتَنُورُالسَّمَاوَاتِوَالْأَرْضِوَمَنْفِيهِنَّ،وَلَكَالْحَمْدُ،أَنْتَقَيِّمُالسَّمَاوَاتِوَالْأَرْضِوَمَنْفِيهِنَّ،وَلَكَالْحَمْدُ،أَنْتَرَبُّالسَّمَاوَاتِوَالْأَرْضِوَمَنْفِيهِنَّ،أَنْتَالْحَقُّ،وَوَعْدُكَالْحَقُّ،وَلِقَاؤُكَحَقٌّ،وَالْجَنَّةُحَقٌّ،وَالنَّارُحَقٌّ،وَالسَّاعَةُحَقٌّ،اللَّهُمَّلَكَأَسْلَمْتُ،وَبِكَآمَنْتُ،وَعَلَيْكَتَوَكَّلْتُ،وَإِلَيْكَأَنَبْتُ،وَبِكَخَاصَمْتُ،وَإِلَيْكَحَاكَمْتُ،فَاغْفِرْلِيمَاقَدَّمْتُوَمَاأَخَّرْتُ،وَمَاأَسْرَرْتُوَمَاأَعْلَنْتُ،أَنْتَإِلَهِي،لَاإِلَهَإِلَّاأَنْتَ» "O Allah! All praise is for You alone, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. All praise is for You, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth. All praise is for You, You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. You are the Truth. Your promise is true. Meeting You is true. Paradise is true. Hell is true and the Hour is true. O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, and I have believed in You, and I have put my trust in You. I have turned to You. By Your power I have argued with my enemies and I have made You my judge, so forgive all my past and future sins, and my hidden and open sins. You are my God, there is no deity for me except You."

Benefits and Issues: ➊ In this hadith, the etiquettes of supplication (du'a) are taught: first, one should abundantly praise Allah, mention His names and attributes extensively, and then present one's need. ➋ In supplication (du'a), good deeds can be presented as a means (wasilah), just as in the mentioned hadith, Islam, faith (iman), trust (tawakkul), turning to Allah (inabah), etc., were mentioned when seeking forgiveness.
