Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I spent one night at the house of my maternal aunt, Umm al-Mu’minin, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). During the night, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) got up and relieved himself, that is, urinated. Then he washed his hands and face and went back to sleep. Then he got up and came to the water-skin, untied its strap, and performed a moderate ablution. He did not use much water, but he completed the ablution thoroughly and started praying. I got up and stretched, fearing that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) might see me and think that I was awake and watching him. I performed ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was still standing and praying, so I stood on his left side. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took me by the hand and moved me to his right side, until he completed thirteen rak‘ahs of his night prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) lay down and slept until he began to snore. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) slept, he would snore. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the Fajr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the prayer but did not perform ablution again. Among the supplications of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were these words: «اللَّهُمَّاجْعَلْفِيقَلْبِينُورًا،وَفِيسَمْعِينُورًا،وَعَنْيَمِينِينُورًا،وَعَنْيَسَارِينُورًا،وَفَوْقِينُورًا،وَتَحْتِينُورًا،وَأَمَامِينُورًا،وَخَلْفِينُورًا،وَأَعْظِمْلِينُورًا» “O Allah! Place light in my heart, place light in my ears, place light on my right side, and place light on my left side, place light above me, below me, in front of me, and behind me, and make for me a great light.” Kurayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Seven things (are written) in the chest (box) with me. I do not remember. Then I met someone from the descendants of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he told me those things. They were: Place light in my muscles, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin, and he mentioned two more things.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ From this, it is understood that the maximum number of units (rak‘at) for the night prayer (qiyam al-layl) is thirteen. This includes the witr prayer as well. Also, apart from Ramadan, it can, by consensus, be performed in congregation occasionally. ➋ The follower (muqtadi) should stand to the right side of the imam when there is no third person present. Also, movement within the prayer for the correction of the prayer is permissible. This does not invalidate the prayer. This refutes the position of those who say that if the foot is lifted, the prayer becomes invalid. ➌ The eyes of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would sleep, but his heart would remain awake; therefore, after waking from sleep, it was not obligatory for him to perform ablution (wudu). However, if his ablution was nullified, then he would perform ablution. ➍ The light (nur) mentioned in the supplication can refer to real light, such that every limb becomes illuminated, by which light can be obtained in the darknesses of the Day of Resurrection; and metaphorically, it can also mean knowledge and guidance, as Allah the Exalted says: ﴿فَهُوَعَلَینُوْرٍمِنْرَبِّهِ﴾ () “He is upon light from his Lord.” And it can refer to both types of light. ➎ The purpose of asking for light in every limb is that every limb becomes an example of obedience to Allah and attains the recognition (ma‘rifah) of Allah. There is not as much emphasis in asking for light only once.
