Hadith 694

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us this supplication just as he would teach a surah from the Qur'an: "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hell, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, I seek refuge with You from the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal), and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death, and from the trial of the grave as well."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
It is necessary to recite the mentioned supplication after the salutations upon the Prophet (salawat) in the tashahhud of prayer. When the son of Imam Tawus rahimahullah did not recite this supplication in prayer, he ordered his son to repeat the prayer. (Muslim: 590) The apparent wording of the hadith also indicates obligation, because in some narrations it is stated: "When one of you performs prayer, let him seek refuge..." (Sahih Muslim: 588) That is, when any of you performs prayer, he should seek refuge from four things. (Sharh Sahih Muslim by al-Nawawi)
