It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate: "O Allah! Set right for me my religion which is the safeguard of all my affairs, and set right for me my worldly life in which is my living, and make death a mercy for me by which I am delivered from every evil and difficulty." Or he said words to that effect.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: ➊ This supplication is extremely comprehensive; it should certainly be made a regular practice in one’s life. If a person’s religion is correct and he is steadfast upon the straight path, then he has attained everything. But if there is corruption in religion, then the blessings of the entire world hold no value, because they are very soon to perish. Thus, the world is also ruined, for the sorrow of its loss constantly weighs upon him, and the Hereafter as well, for nothing has been prepared for it.
➋ No matter how distressed a person is in this world, he always has one support, and that is death. He says, “I will die and be relieved.” But if, after dying, relief is not attained—because life was spent in sin and disobedience, and after death one is faced with punishment—then what will become of him? For this reason, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplicated: O Lord, make my life spent in Your obedience, and keep me away from those deeds which You dislike, so that death may become a means of mercy and tranquility for me.
