Hadith 666

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he recited this supplication while on the pulpit: “(O Allah) Indeed, there is none who can withhold what You give, and there is none who can give what Allah withholds, and the wealth of a wealthy person cannot save him from Your punishment. And whomever Allah intends good for, He grants him understanding of the religion.” I heard these words from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on these very planks of the pulpit. This narration from Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is also reported through two other chains of transmission.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The supplication at the beginning, up to “minhu al-jadd,” used to be recited by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) after every obligatory prayer, therefore it should certainly be observed with diligence. Its meaning is that all authority belongs to Allah, and only His command prevails. In His presence, only obedience to Him has value; the more obedient a person is, the greater his worth, and he alone is deserving of His special mercy. The power of any wealthy or influential person holds no significance before Him. How many Pharaohs has He erased from the face of existence.

➋ Many people possess knowledge of the religion. In society, you will find hundreds of people who are encyclopedias of information, but are devoid of understanding. The comprehension of the statements of Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and their true intent, is granted by Allah to His special servants. This is the understanding that Allah granted to the Companions (radi Allahu anhum), the Followers (Tabi‘in), and after them, the hadith scholars (muhaddithin). By this, the supposed jurisprudence of the blind followers (muqallidin) is not meant, in which all effort is spent on proving the school of the Imam, and all strength is devoted to argumentation while the hadiths are set aside.

➌ From this, the zeal of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) for following the Sunnah is also evident, as our master Mu‘awiyah (radi Allahu anhu) narrated to the people in exactly the same state in which he heard the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
