Hadith 660

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever recites this supplication three times every morning and evening: «بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ» ‘In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the earth or the sky can cause harm. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.’ Nothing will harm him.” The narrator of the hadith (Aban) had paralysis in some parts of his body, so the person listening to the hadith began to look at him. Aban realized his questioning gaze and said: The hadith is exactly as I have narrated it to you, but I did not recite this supplication on the day I was afflicted with paralysis, so that Allah’s decree would be fulfilled.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Whoever recites the above-mentioned supplication three times in the morning and evening with firm resolve and complete certainty is protected from any unforeseen calamity. Therefore, one should make it a point to recite it every morning and evening.
➋ The narrator of the hadith, Aban ibn Uthman rahimahullah, suffered from paralysis, which affected a part of his body. When he narrated this hadith, a listener looked at him with suspicion, as if to say: if this statement is true, then why did he suffer from paralysis? To this, Aban rahimahullah replied: The statement of Allah’s Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is indeed true. It was my own shortcoming that I forgot to recite this supplication on that particular day. One possible reason for affliction is that a person forgets to recite this supplication. However, it should be kept in mind that this is a supplication (du‘a), and there can be obstacles to the acceptance of supplication. For example: the supplication is made with a heedless heart (Tirmidhi: 3479, Sahihah: 594), or one’s food, clothing, etc., are from unlawful (haram) sources (Muslim: 2346).
Another point is that the acceptance of supplication may also take the form of being protected from some other harmful thing of a similar nature. In any case, a person must always ask from Allah, must supplicate continuously, and must do so with certainty, and Allah has promised that He accepts the supplications of His servants.
