Hadith 657

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from the evil of death and life. He also used to seek refuge from the punishment of the grave and from the evil of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Laziness and sluggishness mean that a person, despite having the means, is unable to do anything. In other words, it is the attitude of “I’ll do it today, I’ll do it tomorrow,” such that a person is unable to accomplish any praiseworthy deed.

➋ One meaning of “maghram” is sin and acts of disobedience, that a person becomes immersed in a sinful life to the extent that he does not even think of repentance. Its other meaning is debt, i.e., such a debt that a person does not have the ability to repay. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was asked: Why do you seek refuge from debt to such an extent? He replied: “When a man becomes indebted, he speaks and then lies; he makes a promise and then breaks it.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

➌ The meaning of “ma‘tham” is also indemnity, that a person takes responsibility or guarantee for someone, and that person fails to fulfill it, so the liability falls upon him. Or, without any reason, some loss occurs and the penalty is imposed. Refuge is sought from all these matters in this supplication. The explanation of the other points has already passed. From the second hadith under this chapter, the translation of the chapter heading is established in this way: that laziness is also included among the evils of life from which refuge is sought.
