Benefits and Issues: ➊ If a supplication (dua) is not for sin or severing of kinship, and there is no legal (shar‘i) impediment to its acceptance, then it is certainly accepted. However, the forms of its acceptance may differ; for example, the requested thing may not be granted, but something better may be given in its place, or the reward of the supplication may be delayed, or some calamity may be averted through it, or its reward may be stored for the Day of Resurrection, etc. Therefore, a person should not lose hope.
➋ Among the etiquettes of supplication, it is extremely important to observe the following matters: • Supplicate with presence of heart, adopting the state of neediness. • Supplicate only to Allah Ta‘ala. • Supplicate by means of the Beautiful Names (Asma’ al-Husna) and righteous deeds. • Avoid un-Islamic methods, such as shouting and screaming, and do not exceed the limits. • Do not supplicate for severing of kinship, nor for usurping anyone’s right. • Supplicate with firm conviction, in such a way that one is determined to receive. • Do not express despair if the attainment of the objective is delayed. • Consider the special moments of acceptance and times of heartfelt inclination as precious opportunities. • Along with supplication, utilize permissible means as well. • Do not abandon supplication out of despair.
