Hadith 653

Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to visit our family. One day he (peace be upon him) came and made supplication for us. Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Will you not supplicate for your little servant?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: «اللَّهُمَّ، أَكْثِرْ مَالَهُ وَوَلَدَهُ، وَأَطِلْ حَيَاتَهُ، وَاغْفِرْ لَهُ» "O Allah! Grant him abundance of wealth and children, lengthen his life, and forgive him." The Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicated for me for three things. So, I have buried one hundred and three of my children. As for the abundance of wealth, my fruits are eaten twice a year, and my life has become so long that I feel shy before people, and I also hope for forgiveness.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this narration, it is understood that if one has health and the safety of faith, then a long life is very good because there are more opportunities for good deeds. However, for a useless life in which a person is unable to worship Allah, one should seek Allah’s protection from it.

➋ Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu was greatly blessed as a result of the supplication of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and there was abundant blessing in his wealth and life. It is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that more than one hundred and twenty sons and daughters of Anas radi Allahu anhu had passed away by the era of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, while Anas radi Allahu anhu himself was still alive. The cause of death was the plague that spread in 96 AH, in which seventy thousand people died within three days. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written, referencing Sahih Muslim, that his sons, daughters, and their descendants numbered more than one hundred during his lifetime. The death of a large number of children during the lifetime of their parents is not contrary to blessing, because if a calamity befalls a person in this world and he is patient, he receives reward and recompense, and in the Hereafter, children who died before reaching maturity will also prove beneficial. (See further, Fath al-Bari: 4/229)

➌ Ibn Qutaybah and others have written that in Basrah, besides Anas radi Allahu anhu, there were a few other individuals who saw one hundred sons in their lifetime! Among them were Abu Bakrah, Khalifah ibn Badr, and Muhallab ibn Abi Sufrah. (Fadl Allah al-Samad)
