Narrated from Sayyiduna Tariq bin Ashyam Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to go to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), sometimes a man would come and sometimes a woman would come, and they would say: O Messenger of Allah! When I pray, how should I supplicate? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say: "Say: O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and grant me sustenance." Thus, goodness of this world and the Hereafter has been gathered for you. From the way of Abu Malik, it is also narrated from Sayyiduna Tariq bin Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him) in the same manner, but in it there is no mention of praying. Abdulwahid and Yazid bin Harun have also narrated it without the mention of prayer.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were well-versed in the Arabic language. They could have supplicated in their own words, but they would learn from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) so that they could acquire comprehensive supplications. From this, it is understood that a Muslim should follow the Messenger of Allah and strive to derive every action from the excellent example of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
