Hadith 639

Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to me for some need while I was engaged in prayer. I was delayed in attending to him, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Aisha! Make comprehensive supplications." When I finished the prayer, I asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is a comprehensive supplication? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Say: O Allah, I ask You for every good, whether soon or later, that which I know and that which I do not know. And I seek refuge with You from every evil in this world and the Hereafter, that which I know and that which I do not know. And I ask You for Paradise and for every word and deed that brings me closer to it. And I seek refuge with You from the Fire and from every word and deed that brings me closer to it. And I ask You for everything that Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked You for, and I seek refuge with You from everything from which Muhammad (peace be upon him) sought refuge. And make the outcome of whatever You have decreed for me good."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, the importance of the Prophetic (masnun) supplications is understood, that there is such tremendous benefit in them that with little time and few words, a person can attain immense goodness and blessings.
➋ Those who abandon the Prophetic supplications and run after self-invented litanies and fabricated remembrances have no real understanding of the status and rank of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Their example is like that of a thirsty person who keeps drinking continuously but is never quenched. The words taught by him are comprehensive and sufficient. Praying with them brings a double benefit: one is following the Sunnah, and the other is the supplication itself.
➌ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said that Allah, the Exalted, has granted me concise speech, such that the words are few but the meanings are vast. Therefore, one should always memorize the supplications taught by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and supplicate through them. These are far better than self-invented lengthy supplications.
