Hadith 633

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرُّومِيُّ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : قِيلَ لَهُ : إِنَّ إِخْوَانَكَ أَتَوْكَ مِنَ الْبَصْرَةِ وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِالزَّاوِيَةِ ، لِتَدْعُوَ اللَّهَ لَهُمْ ، قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَنَا ، وَارْحَمْنَا ، وَآتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً ، وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً ، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ ، فَاسْتَزَادُوهُ ، فَقَالَ مِثْلَهَا ، فَقَالَ : إِنْ أُوتِيتُمْ هَذَا ، فَقَدْ أُوتِيتُمْ خَيْرَ الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was said to him that some of your brothers have come to you from Basra so that you may pray for them. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was at the place of Zawiyah in those days. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed as follows: O Allah! Forgive us, have mercy on us, grant us goodness in this world and the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire. When they requested more supplication, Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) again prayed in the same way and said: If you have received this, then you have received the goodness of this world and the Hereafter.

Benefits and Issues:
This supplication is very great and comprehensive. It is comprehensive in the sense that it says: Grant me “hasanah” (goodness) in this world and in the Hereafter. In other words, whatever appears outwardly good but is not truly good is entrusted to Allah, and it is said: O Allah, if this thing is good, or to the extent that it is good, grant it to me, otherwise keep me away from it. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would often recite this supplication, and he would also supplicate with these words during tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka‘bah). If one attains Allah’s forgiveness, His mercy, and goodness in this world and the Hereafter, then there remains no need for anything else. It is also understood from this that it is permissible to go to a pious elder to request supplication.
