Hadith 616

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'I deal with My servant according to his expectation of Me, and I am with him when he calls upon Me.'"

Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this hadith, it is commanded that the servant should call upon his Lord with complete certainty and have confidence in receiving that for which he is supplicating. If the certainty is firm, then the attainment of the objective will also be certain; otherwise, the supplication will be of no benefit.

➋ Allah Ta'ala is not like the creation. While being established (istiwa) over the Throne (‘Arsh), He also descends (nuzul) and is with the pious (muttaqin) and the doers of good (muhsinin). To say regarding Allah Ta'ala’s accompaniment (ma‘iyyah) that He is with us in terms of knowledge is to describe a modality (kayfiyyah), whereas we do not know the modality. If the meaning of ma‘iyyah is taken as being with us in terms of knowledge, then ma‘iyyah and the attribute of knowledge (‘ilm) become one and the same, whereas ma‘iyyah is a separate and independent attribute of Allah Ta'ala. Therefore, the more correct opinion is that the meaning of ma‘iyyah is “being with,” and its modality is consigned to Allah, just as we affirm Allah’s attributes of yad (hand), ‘ayn (eye), saq (shin), and others, but do not describe their modality. Allah Ta'ala, in terms of His essence (dhat), is established over the Throne, and in terms of His knowledge, He is everywhere; that is, while being over the Throne, He has knowledge of everything. Whenever and wherever a servant calls upon Him, He hears his call, provided there is no legal (shar‘i) impediment to the acceptance of the supplication—for example, if the wealth is unlawful (haram) or the supplication is for disobedience, then it is rejected.
