It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to seek Allah’s protection by supplicating: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from becoming very old, and I seek refuge in You from miserliness.”

Benefits and Issues: From this, it is understood that raising the hands for supplication (du'a) is certainly a Sunnah, but it is by no means obligatory. Especially on those occasions where the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not raise his hands, such as in the morning and evening remembrances (adhkar), then not raising the hands there is itself the Sunnah. The four things from which refuge is sought in the hadith tarnish a person's character and render a servant useless. Laziness and indolence have been described as characteristics of the hypocrites; cowardice becomes an obstacle in accomplishing great deeds; and such old age in which a person's faculties fail brings nothing but humiliation. Miserliness is blameworthy in every respect. Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) once said: "Which disease is worse than miserliness?" (Bukhari: 4383)
