It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that in one year the rain stopped and there was a famine. On Friday, a man from among the Muslims stood up and said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! The rain has stopped, the land has become dry, and the livestock are perishing. Hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) raised his hands (during the sermon), while at that time there was no cloud visible in the sky, and he raised his hands so high that I saw the whiteness of his armpits. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked Allah Almighty for rain. We had not yet performed the Friday prayer when, because of the rain, the young man living nearby became anxious to go home. Then this rain continued until the next Friday. When the next Friday came, that man said: O Messenger of Allah! The houses have collapsed, and the riders are stranded. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled at the hastiness of the son of Adam, and raising his hands, said: “O Allah! Let the rain fall around us, not upon us.” So the clouds cleared away from Madinah.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that it is permissible to raise the hands for supplication (du'a) even during the sermon (khutbah), especially when supplicating for rain, as raising the hands and making du'a is a Sunnah practice.
➋ If the rain is excessive and is causing harm, then supplication can also be made regarding it. However, the etiquette is that instead of supplicating for the rain to stop, one should pray in this manner: “O Lord, take it to where it is needed.” One should not say, “O Allah, stop it,” because to plead for the cessation of mercy is contrary to good manners. Moreover, by supplicating for the rain to stop completely, those areas in need of the mercy of rain would be deprived, which is not appropriate in any way.
➌ From this, the miracle of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is also manifested, that by his supplication, rain began immediately, and then by his plea, the clouds dispersed at once.
➍ From this, it is understood that asking a pious person to supplicate is a Sunnah practice, especially in times of calamity and the like, one may request them to make du'a.
➎ When someone requests for supplication, it can be fulfilled immediately or the supplication can be made after some delay, as is established from other narrations.
