It is narrated from Abu Ayyub, whose name is Sulaiman, that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us on a Thursday evening and said: I say emphatically that whoever is one who severs ties of kinship should get up and leave from here. But no one got up, until he repeated this statement three times. Then a young man got up and went to one of his paternal aunts with whom he had severed relations for two years. He went to her, and she said: My nephew! What is the reason for your coming? The young man said: I heard Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) saying such and such. She said: Go and ask him why he said this. (When he asked,) he replied: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "The deeds of the children of Adam are presented before Allah every Thursday night, and the deeds of one who severs ties of kinship are not accepted."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In this context, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has mentioned the entire detailed narration in Da‘if al-Adab al-Mufrad because its chain of transmission is weak. However, its marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet) portion, “The deeds of the children of Adam...” is authentic. In Musnad Ahmad, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu with a good (hasan) chain that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The deeds of the children of Adam are presented before Allah every Friday night, and the deeds of one who severs ties of kinship (qat‘ al-rahm) are not accepted.” (Musnad Ahmad: 2/284)

➋ In some narrations, it is mentioned that the angels’ shifts change in the morning and evening, and they take the deeds of humans (to Allah), whereas in this narration it is stated that the deeds are presented every Friday night. There appears to be a contradiction in these narrations. The reconciliation is that the deeds are indeed taken up every day, but every Friday night they are presented before Allah. In one narration, Monday is also added (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Sawm, Hadith: 2436), which means that along with Thursday, the deeds are also presented on Monday.

➌ From this, one can easily understand the gravity of severing ties of kinship (qat‘ al-rahm), as its effect encompasses all of a person’s good deeds, such that while it exists, the acceptance of other deeds is also put at risk.

➍ One should make friends and keep company with those who maintain the ties of kinship (silat al-rahm). One should not befriend those who sever ties of kinship, because their habits can have an influence.
