It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Yazid (may Allah have mercy on him), he says that Rabi' (may Allah have mercy on him) used to visit Sayyiduna Alqamah on Fridays. If I was not there, he would send a message to me. Once he came and I was not there, then Alqamah met me and said: Do you know what Rabi' brought? And he said: Have you not seen how much people supplicate and how little is accepted! The reason for this is that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, does not accept any supplication except that which is made with sincerity of heart. I said: Did not Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) say this? He said: What did Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) say? He said: Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allah does not accept the supplication of a fame-seeker, a show-off, or one who is playful. The supplication is accepted of the one who supplicates with firm resolve and heartfelt conviction. He said: Did Alqamah remember the words of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: Yes.
