It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman and Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to visit the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he (peace be upon him) was sitting on Sayyidah Aisha’s (may Allah be pleased with her) bed, covered with her sheet. The Prophet (peace be upon him) granted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) permission in that very state. He fulfilled the purpose for which he had come and then left. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) granted him permission in the same state, so he too fulfilled his need and left. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then I sought permission to enter, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat up and said to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), “Adjust your clothes.” He (Uthman) says: I fulfilled the task I had with him and then returned. He says that Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah! The way you made arrangements for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), you did not do so for Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, Uthman is extremely modest and very shy, and I feared that if I permitted him to enter in that state, he would not be able to express his need to me properly.”

Benefits and Issues:
The modesty of Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) is renowned as proverbial; he was extremely modest. The Prophetic statement is: “The most truthful in modesty among them is Uthman.” In some narrations, it is mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Shall I not show modesty to the one before whom even the angels of Allah show modesty?”
