Hadith 596

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: A man from Banu Fazarah gave a she-camel as a gift to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave him a gift in return, but he became displeased (thinking it was less). I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying from the pulpit: "People give me gifts and I give them something in return according to my ability, yet they become displeased. By Allah, after this year, I will not accept a gift from anyone among the Arabs except a Qurayshi, Ansari, Thaqafi, or Dosi."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ It was the noble habit of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that if anyone presented him with a gift or present, he would grant in return something greater than it according to his ability. The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would consider even a little from him as something very great, just as a poet has said:
Wa qaleelun minka la yuqalu lahu qaleel
"Even a little from you cannot be called little."
The aforementioned tribes that have been mentioned would give gifts out of generosity of spirit, without any greed for compensation, such that even if nothing was given in return, the mere acceptance by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was no less than an honor for them.

➋ When a man from the Fazara tribe presented a she-camel as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) understood that he was seeking something greater in return, so he gave him six she-camels. Yet, despite this, the man became displeased. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3091) People would present offerings to kings and receive abundant wealth from them, because those kings possessed both lawful and unlawful wealth. The matter with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the opposite: even what he personally owned, he would give to the needy. Therefore, he would reciprocate generously according to his capacity.

➌ From this, it is understood that a person, due to some expediency, may discontinue the exchange of gifts and transactions with a particular individual; however, it is impermissible to abandon greeting (salam) and well-wishing for this reason.
