Hadith 592

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: One of you sees the speck in his brother’s eye but forgets the beam in his own eye. Abu Ubaid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that «جذل» means a very large, long piece of wood.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ This narration is also reported as marfu‘ (attributed directly to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared it authentic as marfu‘ in his "al-Silsilah al-Sahihah" (al-Sahihah li’l-Albani, Hadith: 33).
➋ Imam Ibn Athir rahimahullah states that this hadith has become proverbial for the person who keeps an eye even on the minor mistakes of others and reproaches them for it, while he himself does not notice the major sins present within himself.
➌ A person should purify himself, and instead of focusing on the faults of others, he should rectify his own condition. However, this does not mean that the obligation of enjoining good (amr bil-ma‘ruf) and forbidding evil (nahy ‘an al-munkar) should be neglected. Advising people for the purpose of reform is one thing, and constantly seeking out their faults is another. It is necessary to understand this distinction. Nowadays, the spirit of sincere goodwill has diminished, and making others distressed and embarrassed has become the primary objective.
