حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَاشِدَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ ثَوْبَانَ يَقُولُ: قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”لاَ تَسْكُنِ الْكُفُورَ، فَإِنَّ سَاكِنَ الْكُفُورِ كَسَاكِنِ الْقُبُورِ“، قَالَ أَحْمَدُ: الْكُفُورُ: الْقُرَى. ¤ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا بَقِيَّةُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَاشِدَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ ثَوْبَانَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ”يَا ثَوْبَانُ ، لَا تَسْكُنِ الْكُفُورَ ، فَإِنَّ سَاكِنَ الْكُفُورِ كَسَاكِنِ الْقُبُورِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Do not reside in remote settlements, for the one who lives in distant villages is like one who lives in graves." Ahmad bin Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that "kafur" refers to villages. In another chain, it is also narrated from Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Thawban! Do not reside in remote settlements, for the one who lives in distant settlements is like those who live in graves."

Benefits and Issues:
Living in the wilderness or in remote villages causes a person to remain distant from knowledge and also backward in religious matters. Thus, due to this distance from religion, harshness develops in one’s temperament. For this reason, such a person has been likened to those residing in graveyards: just as, no matter how many graves there are, there is no one there to impart words of wisdom.
