Hadith 566

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نَشْرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ‏:‏ لأَنْ أَجْمَعَ نَفَرًا مِنْ إِخْوَانِي عَلَى صَاعٍ أَوْ صَاعَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ، أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ إِلَى سُوقِكُمْ فَأُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً‏.‏
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Gathering my Muslim brothers together and feeding them with one or two handfuls of grain is more beloved to me than going to your market and freeing a slave.

The chain of narration of this report is weak; however, the virtue of feeding others is mentioned abundantly in the Qur’an and Hadith. In particular, feeding needy Muslims is a deed of great merit.
