Hadith 566

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نَشْرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَنَفِيَّةِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: لأَنْ أَجْمَعَ نَفَرًا مِنْ إِخْوَانِي عَلَى صَاعٍ أَوْ صَاعَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ، أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ إِلَى سُوقِكُمْ فَأُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: Gathering my Muslim brothers together and feeding them with one or two handfuls of grain is more beloved to me than going to your market and freeing a slave.

The chain of narration of this report is weak; however, the virtue of feeding others is mentioned abundantly in the Qur’an and Hadith. In particular, feeding needy Muslims is a deed of great merit.
