Hadith 564

It is narrated from Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I was sitting with Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) when a thought crossed his mind, then he composed himself and said: Forbearance comes only through experience. He repeated this statement three times.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
Forbearance and patience are sometimes bestowed (wahbi) — that is, Allah, the Exalted, grants them by His special grace — and sometimes they are acquired (kasbi), meaning that a person can become forbearing by exercising patience and exerting self-control. This is why Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (radi Allahu anhu) said that it is experiences that teach a person endurance. A person learns the manner of overlooking the mistakes of others.
