It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “None of you should keep the meat of the sacrifice in his house for more than three days.” Then, when the following year came, the people said: O Messenger of Allah! Should we do the same this year as we did last year? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Eat and store it as well. Last year, because people were in hardship, I wanted you to assist them.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: One year before the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada‘), the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed those performing sacrifice (qurbani) not to keep the meat for more than three days, but rather to distribute it so that those in need could benefit as much as possible. The reason for this was famine and the lack of resources among the people. The following year, when conditions improved, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) permitted the storing of meat. Even now, the ruler of the time may issue such an order in view of Shar‘i (Islamic legal) benefit.
