Hadith 559

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She sought permission, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted her permission to enter. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was resting with Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) under her sheet. When Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) entered, she said: "Indeed, your wives have sent me; they are asking you to be just concerning the daughter of Abu Quhafa." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beloved daughter! Do you love whom I love?" She said: "Of course." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then love her, that is, Aisha." She got up and went and told them everything. They said: "You did not accomplish our task, so go again." Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By Allah, I will not speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about them again." Then they sent Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). She sought permission to enter, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted her permission. She also said the same thing to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and along with that, Sayyida Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) spoke harshly to me. I remained silent, watching to see if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would permit me (to respond). I continued to remain silent until I realized that now, if I retaliated, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not dislike it. Then I also spoke harshly to Sayyida Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) and silenced her in moments. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this situation and smiled, then said: "Why! She is also the daughter of Abu Bakr."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From these narrations, it is understood that the oppressed person may take their recompense, and it also reveals the virtue of Aisha radi Allahu anha, showing what status and rank she held in the sight of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Those who slander her should reassess their faith.

➋ The Mothers of the Believers thought that in their private lives, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not act justly with them and loved Aisha radi Allahu anha more. The reality was that in matters such as assigning turns and giving expenses, he would act with complete justice. Since love is not something within one’s control, he did not give any importance to their objection.

➌ The disputes between co-wives are due to natural jealousy; therefore, the verbal exchanges between Sayyida Aisha and Zaynab radi Allahu anhuma do not affect their faith, nor is it any disrespect to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Rather, it is a dispute over attaining the love of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

➍ The cause of this dispute was that on the day when it was Sayyida Aisha radi Allahu anha’s turn, people would send more gifts. The Mothers of the Believers said, “O Messenger of Allah! Tell the people to send gifts equally to all your wives.” He replied, “I cannot do that.” Subsequently, Sayyida Fatimah and then Zaynab radi Allahu anha were sent for this purpose.

➎ We should love those whom the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam loved, in accordance with the degree of his love. How can someone who harbors enmity towards the one whom the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam loved, and even commanded his beloved daughter to love, claim to be a lover of Ahl al-Bayt?
