It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) that they report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he reports from Allah the Exalted, that Allah Almighty said: "Honor and dignity are My lower garment and greatness is My cloak. Whoever contends with Me regarding these two things, I will punish him."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: Allah Ta'ala has presented an example of His uniqueness and individuality in greatness and majesty, that whoever considers himself adorned with these two attributes and shows arrogance before the commands of Allah Ta'ala and over the creation, Allah Ta'ala will disgrace him in this world and subject him to a painful punishment in the Hereafter. For greatness befits none except Him. History, from Pharaoh and Haman to Abu Jahl, and even after them, is filled with the dreadful ends of the arrogant; therefore, those who choose the path of arrogance should certainly reflect upon their own end.
