It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we were present in the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a Bedouin came. He was wearing a cloak with silk borders (Sijjan). He came and stood near the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: "Your companion, meaning Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), has humiliated every horseman," or he said, "intends to humiliate every horseman, that is, every honorable person, and has elevated every shepherd." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) caught hold of the border of his cloak and said: "Do I not see that you are wearing the dress of the foolish?" Then he said: "Indeed, when the time of death of Allah's Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) drew near, he said to his son: I advise you with a will. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with «لا إله إلا الله», for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of the scale and «لا إله إلا الله» on the other side, it would outweigh them all. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths became a closed ring, «لا إله إلا الله» would break them all. And the second is «سبحان الله وبحمده». It is the prayer of everything, and by its blessing, everything is provided with sustenance. And I forbid you from shirk and arrogance." I said, or it was said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have recognized shirk, but what is arrogance? Is it that one of us has a pair of clothes which he wears?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has two beautiful shoes and two beautiful straps for them?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has a riding animal on which he rides, is this arrogance?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Is it that a person's friends sit with him, is this arrogance?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Rejecting the truth and looking down upon people."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The rural and Bedouin people are generally rough in temperament and arrogant; therefore, Allah, the Exalted, has mentioned the intensity of their disbelief and hypocrisy. For arrogance is the greatest obstacle to accepting the truth. ➋ This person was wearing silk clothing and was speaking in an extremely arrogant tone, boasting about his lineage and criticizing the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informed him of his reality: that you are a fool, for who can be more foolish than an arrogant person? ➌ The mention of both shirk (associating partners with Allah) and arrogance together indicates that both are such destructive sins that they render all of a person's deeds void. In a hadith qudsi, Allah, the Exalted, has said: ((Al-Kibriya’ is My cloak and al-‘Azamah is My lower garment; whoever contends with Me regarding either of them, I will cast him into the Fire.)) (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Hadith: 4090) “Grandeur is My cloak and majesty and greatness are My lower garment; whoever seeks to take even one of these from Me, I will throw him into the Fire.” ➍ This hadith establishes the virtue of La ilaha illallah, which is the foundation of the oneness of Allah, the Exalted (tawhid). Likewise, by the blessing of Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi, Allah, the Exalted, grants provision. Certainty in these two phrases, faith in accordance with them, and frequent remembrance of them are a cause of immense goodness and blessing. Instead of self-invented litanies and supplications containing shirk, one should make these phrases a protection for oneself. ➎ Wearing good clothing or having a good mount is not arrogance, for these are things Allah, the Exalted, has created for mankind. Arrogance is when a person is presented with the truth and, out of pride, refuses and rejects it; when he considers others insignificant and regards himself as superior, even though all people are the children of Adam (alayhis salam) and all have come into this world by the same means. Then how does such greatness befit a human being?
