It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: I am the Most Merciful (Rahman) and I have created the womb (rahm). I have named it after My own name (Rahman). So whoever maintains its ties, I will maintain ties with him, and whoever severs it, I will sever ties with him.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ This is a Hadith Qudsi. That statement which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) narrates from Allah Ta’ala in the form of a hadith is called Hadith Qudsi. Its words are also from Allah, which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) conveys. The meanings of other ahadith are inspired by Allah Ta’ala, but the words are those of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The difference between the Qur’an and Hadith Qudsi is that the means of revelation for the Qur’an is clear revelation (wahy jali), whereas this is not the case for Hadith Qudsi.
➋ From this, the virtue of maintaining ties of kinship (silat ar-rahm) is established: whoever observes its rights, Allah Ta’ala will also bestow upon him and grant him full reward; the one who severs ties of kinship will be deprived of the mercy of the Lord.
➌ It is human nature that a person wants to benefit from others, but does not think of benefiting others himself. Islam has eradicated this selfish mentality and has commanded Muslims to rise above these worldly interests and make sacrifices for the greatest benefit of the Hereafter. The system of the world will only function properly in this way. The survival of the universe lies in the fact that if one commits excess, the other demonstrates tolerance and patience. Otherwise, if everyone pulls in the name of their rights, this system will soon be ruined. Compared to ordinary people, one has more dealings with relatives, so the chances of discord and severing of ties are also greater. The Shari’ah, keeping these dangers in view, has commanded to be especially cautious in this matter. According to the principle “the greater the trial, the greater the reward” (azm al-jaza’ ma’a azm al-bala’), its reward has also been kept very great, and that is the special grace and favor of Allah Ta’ala.
