It is narrated from Abu Asma’ (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: “Whoever visits his sick Muslim brother is in the gardens of Paradise.” I asked Abu Qilabah: What does it mean to be in Paradise? He said: It means that he will receive the fruits of Paradise in return for it. I further asked: From whom does Abu Asma’ narrate this hadith? He said: From Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrates it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Apparently, this narration is disconnected (munqati‘), but in reality, it is connected (mawsul).
➋ From this, it is understood that if a person says something that cannot be said based on personal opinion or independent reasoning (ijtihad), then it is permissible—in fact, necessary—to inquire from him on what basis he is saying it. It is also understood that the pursuit of verification of hadith was the practice of the Salaf.
➌ As long as a person is engaged in visiting (for the sake of) a sick person (i.e., performing the act of ‘iyadah), he is as if he is plucking fruits from Paradise.
