It is narrated from the three sons of Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that in Makkah Mukarramah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill, and he began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Why are you weeping?” He replied: I fear that I will die in the land from which I migrated, just as Sa’d bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: «اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا» “O Allah, grant Sa’d healing.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed three times. He said: I have abundant wealth, and my only heir is my daughter. Should I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He asked: Two-thirds? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: Half of it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: May I bequeath one-third? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Bequeath one-third, and even one-third is much. Giving charity from your wealth is charity, spending on your family is also charity, and whatever your wife eats from your food is also charity for you. And if you leave your family well-off when you depart from this world, it is far better than leaving them in such a state that they have to stretch out their hands before people.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The land which a person leaves for the sake of Allah Almighty, it is a disliked matter to permanently reside there again. This is why Sa’d radi Allahu anhu disliked the idea of dying in Makkah, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also supplicated for his recovery, which was accepted. Afterwards, Sa’d radi Allahu anhu was also blessed with male offspring.
➋ In one’s lifetime, a person may give as much wealth as he wishes in the way of Allah, with moderation, provided that the intention is not to cause harm to anyone. However, at the time of death, one may bequeath at most up to one third.
➌ From this narration, it is understood that a person should continue to strive throughout his life. If he leaves his heirs wealthy, this is better for him, because they will live a life of prosperity and will give charity and alms, which will benefit him. But this does not mean at all that a person should become greedy for the world and do nothing for his Hereafter.
