Hadith 513

It is narrated from Ibrahim bin Abi Ablah (may Allah have mercy on him), he said: My wife fell ill, so I used to visit Sayyidah Umm Darda (may Allah be pleased with her), and she would ask me: How is your wife? I would say to her: She is still ill, so she would have food brought for me and I would eat. Then I would come again and she would do the same. Once I came to her and, as usual, she asked: How is your wife? I said: She is much better. She said: When you used to tell me that your wife was ill, I would have food brought for you, but now since she is better (and can cook food), we will not have anything brought for you.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
From this narration, it is understood that along with visiting the sick, one should also inquire about the needs of their family members. Any tasks that have been left undone due to the illness of the person should be fulfilled, just as Umm Darda’ radi Allahu anha used to do. The actions of Umm Darda’ radi Allahu anha regarding mutual rights are an excellent example for the Muslim society. Furthermore, it is not necessary to go to the patient’s house for visiting; one can also inquire from their friends and family members.
