Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that I once fell ill, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit me. Both of them were on foot. They found me in a state of unconsciousness. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution, then poured the leftover water from his ablution over me, and I regained consciousness. When I looked, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was present. I said: O Messenger of Allah! What should I do about my wealth? And how should I decide? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not give me any answer until the verse of inheritance was revealed.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that caring for an unconscious person is permissible, and furthermore, the visitor should perform ruqyah (spiritual healing, e.g., blowing over the patient after reciting supplications) on their own initiative.
➋ Before the revelation of the verses of inheritance (), making a bequest (wasiyyah) regarding wealth was obligatory. When Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu sought guidance about this, Allah the Exalted revealed the rulings of inheritance and fixed the share of every heir. Now, a bequest (wasiyyah) cannot be made for an heir; however, a bequest can be made regarding other matters. Making a bequest for an heir is abrogated. Apart from this, making a bequest for relatives is necessary. (See: Ahkam al-Jana'iz, Chapter: Obligations of the Sick)
➌ The act of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pouring the leftover water from his ablution (wudu) and Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu regaining consciousness is a miracle of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
