It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that I became severely ill in Makkah Mukarramah, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am leaving behind a considerable amount of wealth, while my only heir is a single daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth in the way of Allah, and leave one-third for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” I said: Should I bequeath half of my wealth and leave half for my daughter? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” I said: Should I bequeath one-third and leave two-thirds for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Bequeath one-third, and even a third is much.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my forehead, passed his hand over my face and stomach, then said: «اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا وَأَتِمَّ لَهُ هِجْرَتَهُ» “O Allah! Grant Sa’d healing and complete his migration.” I continued to feel the coolness of the Prophet’s hand in my liver, even until now.
Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Visiting and caring for the sick (nursing) can be done at any appropriate time, and if the household is not disturbed or if there is an emergency situation, nursing can also be done at night.
➋ A person should send some wealth ahead for his Hereafter before departing from this world; however, one may bequeath up to a maximum of one third of one’s wealth.
➌ From this, it is understood that performing ruqyah (spiritual healing by recitation) is permissible, rather, it is recommended (mustahabb). The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself performed ruqyah, and Jibril Amin (alayhis salam) also performed ruqyah on him. Similarly, Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Aisha (radi Allahu anha) used to perform ruqyah on the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) during his final illness, but instead of using her own hand, she would pass the hand of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) over him.
➍ At the occasion mentioned in the hadith, Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) was the father of only one daughter. By the supplication of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he was cured of this illness. During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (radi Allahu anhu), he also served as the governor of Kufa, and later he was blessed with male offspring as well.
