Hadith 498

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whatever affliction, pain, or illness befalls a Muslim, it surely becomes an expiation for his sins, even if a thorn pricks him or he suffers a minor injury, his sins are forgiven through it."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
Every calamity, trial, and even the slightest discomfort that befalls a Muslim does not go to waste; rather, he certainly receives a reward for it, provided that he is patient and hopes for reward from Allah. This reward sometimes comes in the form of forgiveness of sins, and sometimes with an increase in reward and merit. The second point is that a servant is tested according to his religion. The stronger a person’s faith, the more severe his trial will be. (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 4013)
